We’re delighted to welcome back Nancy Fuller, who will be leading an immersive two-day hand-building workshop tailored for intermediate-level participants. This course will take place on Saturday (18 April) and Sunday (19 April) from 10am-4pm.

Nancy brings a wealth of experience and an inspiring journey to this workshop. She graduated with a degree in Fine Art Printmaking from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee, followed by an MA in the History of Art and Archaeology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Her creative path then led her back to Taiwan, her birthplace, where she discovered wood-firing. This passion took her to Japan, where she trained for a year with anagama master Suzuki Shigeji in Shigaraki before building her own wood-fired kiln in Aberdeenshire. Over the years, Nancy has honed her craft through residencies and symposiums across Europe, Australia, and the US.

What You’ll Learn

This workshop introduces participants to versatile pot-making techniques that can also be adapted for sculptural work. Drawing on traditional methods learned during her studies with master potters in Asia, Nancy will guide you through:

Clay preparation: Wedging and pinching to familiarise yourself with the material.

Building forms: Creating a medium-sized pot while learning how to control its shape and achieve even walls.

Refining details: Using your hands as tools to carefully shape the clay and discover subtle techniques that can enhance your practice.

Nancy’s emphasis on small but impactful details ensures participants leave with the skills and confidence to further explore their unique styles and forms.

Level 2 | Skill Development

This level is ideal for students who have taken one or multiple Level 1 classes and would like to develop their skills. You'll focus on refining technique and exploring more complex forms. Classes are kept small with max 8 participants, to ensure individual guidance and space to develop your skills.

You are ready for this Level if you are familiar with and very comfortable with pinching and coiling clay.

Course Contents

Day 1:
The session begins with a brief overview of techniques and examples of large-scale coil-built work. You’ll then learn how to plan your form and begin constructing the base and lower sections of your piece. Emphasis will be placed on building strong foundations, working with even wall thickness, and managing clay moisture to support the weight of a larger structure. Time is also given for troubleshooting common issues when scaling up hand-built work.

Day 2:
Continue building upwards, refining form and proportion as your piece grows. You’ll learn techniques for joining coils cleanly, shaping with paddles and ribs, and incorporating surface texture or subtle details into your design. The session will also cover finishing techniques to prepare your piece for drying and firing, including smoothing.

Glazing:
After the course your piece will be bisque fired. You have the option of taking your pot away or glaze firing your piece in studio. TS staff will follow up individually with each participant for glazing or collection of bisque work.

Includes 12 hours of instruction clay, tools, and firing for 1 piece. Please ensure you can attend all sessions before booking. Finished work will be ready for collection approximately 4 - 6 weeks after the final glaze date.
