Membership FAQs

  • Sign up today by filling in the form on our membership page here. We will contact you by email and set up a date for your induction. Your membership will start the day you get inducted.

  • Yes, you do. We like our members to have experienced at least 10 hours of teaching. So if you have attended classes elsewhere just let us know in the membership form.

In order to be a member you need: the ability to function in a studio safely, the know-how to clean up after yourself (which we will teach you during induction), and you must know ceramics well enough to operate on your own. (But don’t get us wrong—we love to answer questions when we are around!)

  • Exciting! Why not start with our taster classes? We recommend starting with hand-building if you are a complete beginner.

We ask that you take a full course before becoming a member, then you can learn the ins and outs of the studio and of ceramics. We have amazing teachers who offer incredible beginner’s classes.

  • No. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate full time or production potters at Throwing Shapes.

Part-time professionals can join the studio but all membership access will be capped at 15 hours per week and 60 pieces in the kiln a month.

  • The studio will be open for members from 08h-23.30h everyday. The studio will be open for students during their class time. If you want to drop by for a nosey and a chat come by during visitor hours: Tues-Fri between 10am-6pm and Saturday 10-2pm. Or email us at info@throwingshapes.ie to arrange outside visiting hours.

  • If you have a monthly membership, you have all day access to the studio. You will get your own unique fob when you join, and you’ll be able to get into the space at your leisure. At peak times we may introduce a scheduling system to insure fair use of the studio.

  • Yes! Throwing Shapes membership and classes would make a great gift. Just send us an email at gifts@throwingshapes.ie and we’ll organise it.

  • Our memberships are a minimum of 2 months commitment. Your membership will be taken on the 1st or the 15th of the month by direct debit. We require 30 days notice for cancellation.

  • Please let us know via email at membership@throwingshapes.ie 30 days in advance if you’d like to cancel your membership. We do not retrospectively cancel memberships.

If you cancel your membership and want to join the studio again you will not be given priority to those on the waitlisting for membership.

  • We use Cone 6 clay from Scarva Pottery. We offer ES5 Original White, ES90 Flecked Stoneware, ES60 Smooth Textured Crank, SP10 St Patrick Buff and studio reclaim which is a recycled mixture of all the studio clays. Clay is between €15-23 bag (depending on the clay) or €10/bag for reclaim. We will be adding more clays as the studio grows.

  • Yes! If you are a member, then you can bring in your own clay as long as it is cone 6 clay, and you run it by a member of staff. We need to make sure nothing explodes in our kilns.

  • We do not offer outside firings for non-members.

  • Firings are on a paid per-piece basis. We charge by weight and it is €3/kilo/firing. For example, if your mug weighs 300g, it would cost 60c to bisque fire and 60c to glaze fire. We will send you a bill for your firing fees once a month. You cannot fire over 30 items per month as a member.

  • Nope! Glazes are covered by us.

  • Yes! Feel free to bring in your own glazes and underglazes. You just have to run them by us so that we can double check that they are cone 6. Please store them on your shelf.

  • We have 12+ different glazes available for your use. A solid white gloss, matt white, transparent, and a variety of colours.

  • We fire to Cone 6.

  • Unfortunately we do not allow kids or pets in the studio. If you are a member, please only come yourself. If you have a friend who is interested in joining, then we would love to meet them, please reach out via email and we can set up a tour! We also offer guest passes for €50/day if you would like someone to join you for a clay session.

  • If you are in the studio, ask Siofra, Emma or Aine. Otherwise, ask another member! Still have an unanswered question? Please email info@throwingshapes.ie
