Taught by Nancy Fuller

We’re delighted to welcome Nancy Fuller, our first international guest potter, to Throwing Shapes! Nancy will be leading an immersive two-day hand-building workshop tailored for intermediate-level participants. This course will take place on Saturday (12 April) and Sunday (13 April) from 10am-4pm.

Nancy brings a wealth of experience and an inspiring journey to this workshop. She graduated with a degree in Fine Art Printmaking from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee, followed by an MA in the History of Art and Archaeology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Her creative path then led her back to Taiwan, her birthplace, where she discovered wood-firing. This passion took her to Japan, where she trained for a year with anagama master Suzuki Shigeji in Shigaraki before building her own wood-fired kiln in Aberdeenshire. Over the years, Nancy has honed her craft through residencies and symposiums across Europe, Australia, and the US.

What You’ll Learn

This workshop introduces participants to versatile pot-making techniques that can also be adapted for sculptural work. Drawing on traditional methods learned during her studies with master potters in Asia, Nancy will guide you through:

Clay preparation: Wedging and pinching to familiarise yourself with the material.

Building forms: Creating a medium-sized pot while learning how to control its shape and achieve even walls.

Refining details: Using your hands as tools to carefully shape the clay and discover subtle techniques that can enhance your practice.

Nancy’s emphasis on small but impactful details ensures participants leave with the skills and confidence to further explore their unique styles and forms.

Course Schedule

Dates & Times: 12th and 13th of April. The workshop runs from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on both days.
Class Size: Limited to a maximum of 8 participants for an intimate and hands-on experience.
Cost: €400, inclusive of all materials. You will make one main pot around 30-35 cm or two smaller pots around 20-25 cm. We will bisque fire them for you to collect at Throwing Shapes - glazing is not included.
