Our Pottery Foundation Course offers 15 hours of hands-on teaching over one weekend, running from 10:00–16:00 on Saturday and Sunday with a 2.5 hour evening glazing session a few weeks later. Glazing date is provided below in Course Schedule. Geared toward beginners who have some experience in clay, this course covers both wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques. You’ll choose five of your unique ceramic pieces to glaze later, guided by our expert teacher Lucy.

Level 1 | Foundational Skills

Ideal for those who’ve completed a taster session or first timers. This course offers a structured and in-depth learning experience over six weeks, focusing on essential techniques in wheel throwing. You'll build confidence with form, process, and studio practice in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Includes 15 hours of teaching time, clay, tools, and firing/glazing for up to 5 pieces. Classes are kept small from 6 to 9 participants, to ensure individual guidance and space to develop your skills. On completion, you’ll have the experience needed to become a studio member.

Course Schedule

Over 12 hours (6 hours daily) students will become familiar with the foundational teachings of wheel throwing. There will be a 2.5 hour glazing session approximately 4 weeks after the course. See below for glaze dates.

Day 1:
Learn wheel-throwing basics like centering clay and shaping cylinders and bowls as well as hand-building techniques like pinching and coiling. Different wheel thrown shapes (bottles, plates) will be discussed & questions are encourged. You’ll also cover clay preparation and wedging.

Day 2:
Handbuilding will also be touched on in Day 2, as well as refining your pieces with trimming, attaching handles, and exploring decoration techniques. The day also covers clay recycling, drying, and firing, giving you a complete introduction to pottery.

Glazing:
Each weekend course has a specified glazing date, please ensure you are available for both the weekend and your evening glazing date:

Month Weekend - Date Glaze (6:30 - 9:00)

Includes 15 hours of teaching time, clay, tools, and firing/glazing for up to 5 pieces. Please ensure you can attend all sessions before booking. Pieces will be ready for collection approximately 4 weeks after the final glaze date.

FAQs

What is your cancellation policy?
To request a cancellation and refund, you must email refunds@throwingshapes.ie. Refunds requested more than two weeks prior to the first class are fully refundable. There will be no refunds once the class begins in any circumstance, nor can we transfer you to another class. Unfortunately we cannot be flexible on this policy for any reason. Should a class not fill sufficiently, we may cancel or reschedule it one week prior to the first class session.

What if I miss a day of my course? 
If you miss a day you will not be able to make it back. You must be able to attend each week/day of the same course. You cannot transfer days or make up time. Please check you are available for every date before booking your course.

Are there any additional fees?
No - everything is included in your course. If you'd like to buy your own starter toolkit you can do so when purchasing your class online, but tools will be provided either way. 

Can I sign my kids up for classes? 
No, all students must be 18+ to attend classes. 

Can I gift a class to someone? 
Of course! You can buy a gift card here which the lucky recipient can use to purchase classes.

Can I fire and glaze my own work? 

For our taster classes you pick a glaze and we glaze the work for you.

For our 6 week courses you pick 5 of your favourite pieces and glaze them on your 6th week. 

For our weekend 2-Day or 3-Day courses you will return 4 weeks later to glaze your own work. You will be notified of this date after you have booked the course. 

If I don't see any classes available - when will they be added? 
We add new blocks of classes approximately three months in advance of classes starting.

Can I join a waiting list for classes? 
Yes you can! If a class is sold out you will see the option to join a waiting list. You can sign up there and you will get notified if there are cancellations. 

Can I prebook classes for the next block before they are released? 
No, classes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Can I switch between a class or course if my availability changes? 
This is subject to availability. You can email info@throwingshapes.ie to see if we have anything available to switch to.

T&Cs

• All students must be 18+ to register for classes.

• All levels welcome, from beginner to expert. 6-9 people per class. Should a class not fill sufficiently, we may cancel or reschedule it one week prior to the first class session.
