Our shared responsibility...

At our studio, we recognise that the materials we work with such as clay, glazes and water, are not limitless resources but the result of long, complex and energy-intensive refining processes. It is our collective responsibility to honor these materials by using them thoughtfully and conserving them whenever possible.

We believe that the act of creation in ceramics should be mindful, considering the long-term impact of our work. Every piece that is fired and glazed becomes part of the earth for generations, which is why we encourage our members and students to take special care in deciding what to bring to life through the kiln.

We ask all who share this space to be intentional with their practice:

  • Conserve Water: Be mindful of your water usage during all stages of your work. Simple habits, like reusing rinse water and avoiding unnecessary waste, contribute to preserving this precious resource.
  • Respect the Firing Process: Each kiln firing requires a significant amount of energy. Only fire pieces that you feel truly represent your best work and take the time to refine your creations before they go into the kiln. The over-firing of practice pieces adds unnecessary strain on both the environment and our shared studio resources. Objects with sharp edges which are unsafe for use should not be fired.
  • Thoughtful Glazing: Glazing is a process that requires testing, practice and patience. We encourage all members to use test tiles before glazing full pieces. This will help you understand how each glaze behaves and will reduce mistakes, saving both glaze and time. By approaching glazing with care and foresight, you’ll ensure that your final pieces are as refined as possible. If you are new or inexperienced with glazing - please join one of our workshops.

By working together to preserve materials and be selective about what we fire, we are contributing to a more sustainable studio practice. Let each piece that you create carry the intention and respect that these materials deserve.
