Course Contents

Over six weekly 2.5-hour sessions, students will build on the foundations established in Level 1 through a structured programme of demonstrations, guided practice, and individual tuition. Each week introduces more complex forms and techniques, encouraging greater confidence, consistency, and independence at the wheel.

Week 1: Revisiting the Fundamentals
Refresh core throwing techniques, assess individual skill levels, and establish goals for the course while refining centring, cylinders, and bowls.

Week 2: Refining Form & Technique
Focus on improving consistency, wall thickness, proportion, and control while introducing taller and more refined forms.

Week 3: Throwing with Intention
Learn to throw to specific measurements, create matching forms, and develop a more considered approach to shape, proportion, and function.

Week 4: Handles, Rims & Advanced Forms
Explore handle making as a design feature while refining rims, spouts and other techniques that elevate functional pottery.

Week 5: Finishing & Refinement
Complete, trim, and refine your work, focusing on surface quality, foot rings, and preparing pieces for glazing.

Week 6: Glazing
Glaze your finished work using dipping and pouring techniques, with an introduction to glaze chemistry and how glaze materials influence colour, texture, and surface.

The course includes 15 hours of tuition, all clay, tools, and firing, with glazing for up to five finished pieces. Please ensure you can attend all sessions before booking, as missed classes cannot be repeated. Clases begin on the date listed and run for 6 weeks, including bank holidays. Finished work will be ready for collection approximately 4–6 weeks after the final glaze session.
